Etiquette Still Matters on Camera

Just because you are recording from home does not mean professionalism goes out the window. Video interviews, whether live or async, are real interviews. The hiring team is evaluating you the same way they would in person. The medium has changed; the expectations have not.

With 82% of employers now using virtual interviews (B2B Reviews, 2025), knowing how to present yourself on camera is no longer optional. It is a core professional skill.

Before the Interview

  • Test your technology: Check your camera, microphone, and internet connection at least an hour before. Do a test recording to verify audio and video quality.
  • Read the instructions carefully: Know how many questions there are, what the time limits are, and whether you can re-record. Do not discover these details during the interview.
  • Prepare your environment: Choose a quiet, well-lit room with a tidy background. Remove potential distractions, pets, roommates, phone notifications.
  • Dress appropriately: Dress as you would for an in-person interview at that company. When in doubt, one step above the company's dress code is safe.

During the Interview

Eye contact with the camera. This is the number one etiquette tip for video interviews. Look at the camera lens, not at yourself or the interviewer's image on screen. It creates the impression of direct eye contact and dramatically improves how you come across.

Listen fully before answering. In async interviews, read the entire question before starting to formulate your response. In live interviews, let the interviewer finish speaking before you begin. Interrupting, even accidentally due to audio lag, is jarring on video.

Be concise and structured. Video amplifies rambling. Structure your answers using frameworks like Situation-Action-Result for behavioral questions. State your key point first, then elaborate. Aim for 1.5 to 2.5 minutes per response in async format.

Body Language on Camera

  • Sit up straight but not rigidly. Lean slightly forward to convey engagement.
  • Use natural hand gestures within the frame. They add energy and emphasis.
  • Smile genuinely at appropriate moments. Warmth translates through the screen.
  • Avoid fidgeting with pens, hair, or your face. On camera, small movements are magnified.

Async-Specific Etiquette

Async interviews have unique etiquette considerations:

  • Complete the interview within the deadline. Waiting until the last hour signals procrastination, not thoroughness.
  • Do not over-rehearse. It is tempting to script your responses and read them, but hiring teams can tell. A natural, conversational tone beats a polished-but-robotic delivery every time.
  • Use the re-record wisely. Re-record if you made a significant error or went blank, but do not chase perfection. Authenticity is more memorable than flawlessness.
  • Treat it like a real interview. Do not eat, check your phone, or have the TV on in the background. The recording captures everything.

After the Interview

If the platform allows it, review your submission before confirming. Once submitted, send a brief thank-you note to the recruiter, just as you would after an in-person interview. This small gesture demonstrates professionalism and genuine interest.

According to intervue.io (2025), 92% of candidates appreciate the flexibility of async formats. Show that you appreciate it too by taking the process seriously.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Recording in a noisy coffee shop or public space
  • Using a virtual background that glitches and distracts
  • Looking at notes taped next to the camera (it is obvious)
  • Submitting without watching your recording back
